Your Thief River Falls Winter Activities Guide

It is finally that time of year! The snow has fallen and the cold has made its way in. There’s no better way to embrace our long winter months other than with some fun outdoor activities. Thief River Falls has plenty of winter activities that are perfect for you and your family!

From ice fishing to fat biking, there are many ways to enjoy our long season ahead! In Thief River Falls, we have two outdoor skating rinks located at Northrop and Engelstad parks. These rinks are open to the public everyday of our winter months! The Ralph Engelstad Arena also has set days and times for any one to come in and enjoy open skating and hockey. These both are great ways to get out and have some fun on the ice.

There is also plenty to do on the Northland and Greenwood Trails during this season. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing can be put to great use on these trails. You can rent snowshoes at the Wild Side here in Thief River Falls.

Another way to stay active during winter is fat biking. A fat tire bike is a bike with oversized tires designed for riding off-road, particularly in the snow. The Northland Trails and the river are great paths for these. The Red Lake River can be the heart of winter here in Thief River Falls. Many outdoor activities are put to use on the river. If you like to fish and or own an ice house, the Red Lake River is perfect for you. You can also ice skate on designated areas of the river. Snowmobiling is another very popular attraction in northern Minnesota. There are many trails in the surrounding areas of Thief River Falls perfect for snowmobiling, as well as the Red Lake River and ditches on the edges of town.

While winter may be a dreaded time of year for some, there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy and make the most of it! With the Red Lake River, Greenwood and Northland Trails, Thief River Falls has plenty to offer for these winter months ahead!
