Tales of TRF – Your Outdoor Recreation Destination

Thief River Falls is home to some of the best outdoor recreation opportunities in the state. As the birthplace of Arctic Cat, our snowmobile trails are top-notch and kept in pristine condition. The USXC International 500 mile snowmobile race runs through Thief River Falls, which is a nod to the well-maintained trails. Thief River Falls has access to more than 500 miles of groomed trails that interconnect to over 1,500 miles of trails in northwest Minnesota. Our city is a snowmobile hub with 5 trails leading out of the city, and what's really neat is snowmobilers can ride on our streets within city limits.

The Thief River and Red Lake River offer outstanding fishing year-round, both on the water and from the shores. Hunting is a big draw for visitors in the fall season. The waterfowl hunting opportunities on and around the 54,000 acre Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area attract goose, duck and crane hunters from across the Midwest.

Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge is located near Thief River Falls as well, and offers 61,000 acres of diverse plant and animal life. It is the largest wildlife refuge in the state of Minnesota, and is an incredible birding treasure. Thief River Falls is included in Minnesota’s first (and North America’s second) international birding trail. With 45 sites, bird watchers and lovers of wildlife will find the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail a real paradise! Situated at the juncture of 3 major ecosystems—tall-grass prairie, boreal forests and aspen parkland—this Northwestern Minnesota trail provides a unique collection of habitats that provide homes for a tremendous variety of birds. The refuge is a haven for 280 species of birds and its bird watching opportunities draw birders from across the country. Their visitor log book is proof of that!
