Thief River Falls is home to a beautiful disc golf course, and funds are currently being raised for a second course. The disc golf course at Lions Park is a well maintained 9 hole beginner course and it averages 160 feet per hole with no elevation changes and few trees or obstacles. Everyone is welcome and invited to join the weekly disc golf league at Lions Park every Thursday at 11am and/or 6pm.
The future disc golf course at Oakland Park will be a 9 hole advanced course. And the average hole length will be 310 feet. It will offer elevation changes on multiple holes and it will be wooded and have some raised targets to add to the challenge of the course. Sponsors are still being sought for that course, and online donations can be made here.
Disc golf enthusiast, Ben Wattenphul, shared this note with me, “Disc Golf is fun because can't becomes CAN! Each Thursday for our disc golf league I help give tips and pointers like how to throw certain shots, what type of disc should be used or, people's favorite, HOW TO THROW FAR. After a short set of tips on how to throw far, one of the women who plays each week became giddy after seeing her throw clear the row of trees on hole two. This might be a little thing for some, but I have seen the young and old, the athletic and average, set a disc floating and singing through the air bringing awe and laughter in a sport that can be full of achievement and surprise. Bottom line, disc golf is a sport with many things to enjoy and celebrate in the beautiful setting of our local parks.”
